Eligibility for Candlelighters Services - effective July 1, 2009Rocky Mountain Candlelighers is pleased to be able to serve all children with cancer and their families in the areas served by Primary Children's Medical Center: all of Utah and parts of Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho and Montana. Families are eligible for services for five (5) years from date of diagnosis or recurrence free-of-charge. After the five years, families graduate to Alumni status where they can continue to participate in all activities and events on a shared cost basis. This allows Candlelighters to focus its attention and resources to newly diagnosed families and those still in treatment where the need is greatest. In-Hospital Services at Primary Children's Medical CenterCareBagsThis is a totebag for parents who stay with their hospitalized children. This Candlelighters canvas bag may contain adult toiletries, meal passes for the cafeteria, a log book, journal, playing cards, snacks, toys and more. The totebag will be given to each newly registered family at Primary Children's Medical Center or during a home visit. If not given out at the hospital, a Candlelighters volunteer will visit the family at home with a carebag. Parents' PantryCandlelighters supplies a parents' pantry in the Oncology Unit for parents needing toiletries, snacks or cafeteria meals while waiting with their child after their first admission. Community-Based ServicesActivities
Survivorship ConferencesCandlelighters co-hosts a day-long seminar on Cancer Survivorship with other members of the Utah Cancer Action Network's Quality of Life workgroup each fall. The conference features national and local speakers on survivorship issues for adult and childhood cancer survivors. Special break-out sessions focus on childhood cancer specifically. All parents and adult survivors are invited. Registration for each Survivorship Conference is online at UCAN. Childcare is usually offered. The conference and childcare are free-of-charge. Emotional SupportAs families faced with childhood cancer need to address the emotional issues they confront, we offer support groups and individual counseling on an as-needed basis. Candlelighters also offers referrals for individual and family counseling. Quarterly NewsletterThis quarterly publication informs families of upcoming events and provides articles of interest to both parents and children. The newsletter is also a review of activities, fund-raising events and a means of thanking donors. Family Financial EducationNew in 2008, Candlelighters offers regular seminars on financial literacy, debt and budget management, and financial planning to aid families with their financial situations during and after treatment for cancer. These services are offered in partnership with the Utah Financial Planners Association and AAA Fair Credit Foundation. Community EducationCandlelighters works hard to educate the community and medical provider about the needs of families undergoing childhood cancer. The warning signs, effects and survivorship issues are also shared with families with cancer and those concerned about cancer. |
